Russian intercept of US Navy plane causes 'violent turbulence'

"The Russian SU-30 crossed in front of the P-8 (from right to left) in afterburner causing a 15 degree roll and violent turbulence".

A US Navy P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine warfare aircraft was intercepted by a Russian Air Force Su-30 Flanker fighter jet.

Russia's military responded Tuesday by saying its jet had been dispatched because the USA plane was approaching its borders "at high speed", according to the state-run TASS news agency.

Approaching at high speed, the Russian jet, equipped with air-to-air missiles, came within five feet of the United States aircraft during the 24 minute incident.

In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said: "After moving closer, the Russian fighter jet flew over the object and visually identified it was an American reconnaissance aircraft P8A Poseidon".

Moscow justified the actions of the fighter jet by saying that the American aircraft was on course to illegally enter Russian airspace.

"The U.S. aircraft was operating in worldwide airspace and did nothing to provoke this Russian behavior", Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, a spokeswoman for the Pentagon, told reporters.

According to the Pentagon, the Russian fighter swooped in to follow the USA aircraft while in worldwide airspace-an acceptable precaution after identifying a foreign jet, even though the P-8A had its transponders on.
