Snapchat redesigns mobile app in attempt to split friends from media

The new Friends page to the left of the camera displays your friends based on the way you communicate with them.

Snap on Wednesday unveiled a drastic revamp of its Snapchat app in hopes of luring more users to the platform. The company is also adding a new algorithm for users to discover content in their news feeds, claiming its significantly better than what it had been using before.

The redesigned app will be available to a small percentage of users right away and roll out to everyone "in the coming weeks", Snap said.

With the upcoming redesign of Snapchat, we are separating the social from the media, and taking an important step forward towards strengthening our relationships with our friends and our relationships with the media.

"You can think of it as a more sophisticated Best Friends algorithm that makes it easier to find the friends you want to talk to, when you want to talk to them".

SNAPCHAT has completely redesigned its app today in a bid to attract new users by making it more appealing and less hard to use. Apart from lagging user growth-daily users grew just 2.9 percent in the third quarter, the slowest rate since the company began reporting it-Snapchat also faces looming competition from Facebook and Instagram, both of which recently introduced their own version of stories.

Canada makes Top 10 at Miss Universe pageant
Demi-Leigh plans to share these workshops and help as many women as she can, according to the official Miss Universe website. The Top 5 candidates, after the Evening Gown competition, were: South Africa, Venezuela, Thailand, Jamaica, and Colombia.

The Discover page to the right of the app - where the professionally produced stories and shows from media and entertainment brands live - is also getting a more personalized touch and will adapt to the interests of the user.

The redesigned Snapchat will keep friends and social content separate.

"Social media fueled "fake news" because content created to be shared by friends is not necessarily content created to deliver accurate information", Spiegel wrote. But, in one of the app's biggest changes, any chatting with friends or public Stories that friends post will now be accessible by swiping to the left side of the app. What co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel means by this is a not-so-veiled shot at the Facebook News Feed, which has become an unappealing stew of sponsored posts, branded videos, misleading news stories and - tucked somewhere in between all of that - a few updates from your actual friends.

The new Snapchat app still opens to the camera, but there are changes from there. This changes how most of the content is shown to users and also includes some new features.

"This will continue to set us apart from other platforms", Snapchat's announcement said, "and help us ensure that each user sees multiple perspectives from a wide variety of publishers and creators, and continue to protect our community from filter bubbles and fake news".

Facebook and Instagram had been going insane with "Hearts" for quite some time, and Twitter finally chose to join in as well. Earlier this year, it was reported that more users use the Stories feature on Instagram than on Snapchat.
