Tesla to enter trucking business with new electric semi

Investors prodded Tesla's shares 2% higher in early trade in NY, shrugging off worries it was over-stretching itself with the new futuristic trucks and pricey sports auto launched in a glitzy event in California yesterday.

Elon Musk's company Tesla has revealed its eagerly anticipated heavy goods vehicle and an unexpected sports auto, both of which run on electric power. There's also a version with a 300-mile range. The company is guaranteeing the Semi drivetrain will last to 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometres), equivalent to 40 trips around the globe.

The truck has a 500-mile range on one charge even if it's fully loaded at a gross vehicle weight of 80,000 pounds.

With these heavy-hitting clients standing in line for their Teslas, it's no wonder that the future of the electric semi truck market is looking bright.

According to TechCrunch, it's a two by two four-seater and will be available in 2020 starting at $200,000, with 1000 Founder's Series models being sold retailing at $250,000 each. Then Tesla announced a new roadster, which Tesla says will go from zero to 60 in 1.9 seconds, has a top speed of 250 miles per hour and has a 620-mile range.

Call of Duty: WWII is getting some much needed updates
Since the game released, I've yet to see a single other player in the game's online social hub, dubbed Headquarters. Apparently, the first update solved a few problems in terms of online connectivity, but killed server performance.

Like all Tesla products, the Semi comes with impressive acceleration and horsepower. On the one hand, the Tesla Semi is shaping up to be the hot-rod of trucks, with a 0-60 miles per hour time of 20 seconds even when at maximum 80,000 pound load.

"Electric motors have advantages for hauling: fewer moving parts, cheap fuel and zero tailpipe pollution", NPR's Emily Sullivan reports. "There is of course only one thing beyond ludicrous, but that speed is reserved for the next generation Roadster in 4 years: maximum plaid." said Musk.

But truck drivers may still have some reservations. The chair and steering wheel are in the cab's center. The auto, coming in 2020, will have a base price of $200,000.

Those setbacks didn't do much to dampen the hype surrounding Thursday's unveiling - and it gained more energy as the Roadster, which from 2008 to 2012 was Tesla's star vehicle, returned to the lineup.

Indeed, Tesla CEO's Elon Musk swung between the sort of performance numbers that have traditionally enthused the automaker's consumer buyers, and figures more palatable for fleet operators. These are just concept vehicles, really, but it's Tesla, and nothing is really ever as it seems.
