They would have 21 days from being elected to provide information about their country of birth, their parents' birthplace and citizenship.

If they had been a dual citizen, they would need to provide details and evidence of the time and manner in which their foreign citizenship was renounced or otherwise came to an end.

The prime minister said the High Court would remain the sole body that determined whether an MP was ineligible to sit in parliament.

"The problem of Australia is we have uncertainty over the constitutional eligibility of parliamentarians to make laws affecting all Australians", Opposition leader Bill Shorten told reporters.

The prime minister said this was a necessary and important step to address the "legitimate concern" that there is not enough transparency about politicians' citizenship status. "The obligation is on each member and each senator to make a full disclosure as I have repeatedly said in recent times", Mr Turnbull said.

The Australian Greens won't be supporting the plan.

Fairfax says there is no record of Mr Alexander's father having renounced at any time after 1948 via the British National Archives online search, while under United Kingdom citizenship laws from that year, children born to British citizens are automatically given citizenship by descent.

The declaration must state to the best of their knowledge they are not a citizen of another country.

If federal politicians were to make false or incorrect declarations it would be a serious breach of parliamentary privilege.

Numerous politicians had argued that they had not been aware they were dual nationals due to their parents or place of birth.
