Tom Baker returns for 'lost' episode of Doctor Who

Titled "Shada", the six-part storyline was set to be the third and final Doctor Who episode from iconic sci-fi scribe Douglas Adams (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy).

Almost forty years later, though, the cast of the story have been reunited and chief among them is Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor himself who played the role from 1974-1981.

The story was cut short by a strike at the BBC, but over seven hours had already been filmed.

The former Lenham resident who now lives in Sussex made a surprise appearance as Doctor Who for the newly released story, Shada, filmed in Cambridge. That's because an abandoned story from 1979, which has gained legendary status over the years, is finally being completed using animation. The episode had to be shelved due to an industrial strike at the BBC. Last year, the BBC also released an animated version of The Power of the Daleks using audio from the original episode, after losing the source video.

In the new scene, the Fourth Doctor delivers lines from Adams" original script: "I expect that sometime in the future-in about 200 years' time-someone will meet me and say, "Is that really the Doctor?"

The lost episode will be available to buy on digital download and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 4.

"When I was doing Doctor Who it was the realization of all my childhood fantasies...so I took to it like a duck to water and I still do", Baker revealed. I used to dread the end of rehearsal because then real life would impinge on me. Together, they will defeat the alien, Skagra, who has an evil plan of trying to steal intergalactic secrets to the prison planet of Shada.

I think it never left me and that's why I can't stay away from it.
