US Special Counsel Reportedly Probing Plot To Hand Over Turkish Cleric Gulen

The special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating an alleged plan that Michael Flynn, the former White House national security adviser, discussed with the Turkish government to forcibly remove a Muslim cleric living in the US, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

News' report does not have any information about the nature of the meeting, although it says that it is reviewing emails sent from Flynn's firm to Rohrabacher's staff thanking them for arranging the meeting. According to the paper, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have asked people about a meeting Flynn had with Turkish government officials at New York's "21" Club in December regarding removing Gulen from the US.

There is no indication the $15 million changed hands.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly looking into new allegations involving ex-Trump adviser Michael Flynn and a Muslim cleric in the USA wanted by the Turkish government.

The Alliance for Shared Values, a group representing Gülen supporters in the US, said: "The US justice system should be commended for not giving in to the Turkish government's campaign against Mr Gülen, no matter how nefarious a plan the Erdogan regime could concoct nor how much money it could offer people who might entertain such plans".

The allegations of a plot involving the dissident cleric could open up Flynn and his son to charges including 'conspiracy to kidnap'.

The Journal said the people who described the alleged proposal didn't attend the December meeting and didn't have direct knowledge of the details.

The discussions allegedly included how to transport Gulen on a private jet to Turkey. But today's news cycle has brought allegations against General Flynn, ranging from kidnapping to bribery, that are so outrageous and prejudicial that we are making an exception to our usual rule: "they are false", they wrote in a statement.

Investigators were also looking into the actions of his son, Michel Flynn Jr, in relation to the case.

If this sounds vaguely familiar, it's because the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year on a meeting Flynn hosted in NY in September 2016, in which participants basically talked about kidnapping Fethullah Gulen, removing him from his home in Pennsylvania, circumventing America's extradition process, and delivering him to Turkey's government, which considers Gulen a risky enemy.

"We continue to work in close coordination with our colleagues in the relevant USA agencies to ensure that they comprehend the full scope of the criminality of FETO, the Fetullah Gulen Terror Organization, and the justifications for Gulen's extradition", the statement read.

Mueller's interest in the nature of Flynn and Rohrabacher's discussion marks the first known time a member of Congress could be wrapped into the investigation.

The Mueller investigation into the Flynns is part of an overall probe into the Trump campaign's involvement with Russian Federation.

Before joining the Trump administration, Flynn had lobbied on behalf of the Turkish government in the U.S. He didn't reveal this fact until March of this year.
