Volvo Selling Thousands of Self-Driving Vehicles to Uber

A confirmed report from an Uber spokesperson says that the company has just ordered around 24,000 Volvo XC90 SUVs for its line of the driverless fleet.

Volvo and Uber have been working closely on the technology of the purpose-built XC90, which will be delivered in a way that Uber can easily mount its own self-driving tech on the vehicle roof. It would be the first of its kind. Previously, we've seen Uber test its self-driving Volvo XC90 SUVs in Pittsburgh, and the company has already established a strong and strategic partnership with Volvo since August 2016.

It's all a sign of the times as vehicle makers seek a way to stay relevant and successful with the onslaught of new technology and mobility solutions, and the tie-up with Uber is a very sensible route for Volvo to pursue.

The deal will boost sales at Volvo and should also help lower the cost of the Chinese-controlled group's own fully-autonomous cars planned from 2021.

Uber was thrown into disarray earlier this year when Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew its licence to operate in the British capital due to concerns about public safety for passengers and the process of driver registration.

Volvo said it will supply XC90s with the core autonomous driving technologies that Uber needs to add its own self-driving features. "Our goal was from day one to make investments into a vehicle that could be manufactured at scale", Jeff Miller, Uber's head of automotive alliances, said.

Ford announced earlier this year it is working with Uber rival Lyft on a driverless auto trial programme, while Chrysler is supplying Pacific hybrids to Google's self-driving arm Waymo for its self-driving taxis trial. "It only becomes a commercial business when you can remove the vehicle operator from the equation", Miller told Reuters.

Although, Uber and Volvo have entered into an agreement, there is still no time period set when Uber will launch its driverless ride hailing service.
