White House denies Trump made slur with 'Pocahontas' remark

Trump, who has identified Warren as "Pocahontas" before, made the remark during a ceremony Monday recognizing Native American code talkers who served during World War II.

"I don't believe it is appropriate to use a racial slur in any context". Warren says her parents told her of the Native American connection and she listed herself with that heritage in law school directories to meet others with similar backgrounds.

Pocahontas was a Powhatan Native American woman, born around 1595, known for her involvement with English colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. "As a white person, I think I'm in a better position to know about this stuff".

Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as "Pocahontas" by calling the term an "unnecessary" ethnic slur.

How much more will it take for all of the Trump apologists to realize that President Trump is historically ignorant, socially oblivious and downright insulting to the people he tried to honor?

"You were here long before any of us were here", Trump said standing in the Oval Office, The Hill reports.

"You were here long before any of us were here - although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago".

Instead, the comments have drawn the wrath of one Indigenous organisation and Senator Warren has accused the President of making a racial slur.

"I think what most people find offensive is Senator Warren lying about her heritage to advance her career."

"Donald Trump does this over and over thinking somehow he is gonna shut me up with this", Warren said. Navajo Nation Council Delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty on Monday called Trump's comment "deeply offensive and unsafe".

Q: At the event that the president just did with the Navajo code talkers, he referred to Pocahontas being in the Senate. "It hasn't worked out in the past, it isn't going to work out in the future", Warren told MSNBC. "The prejudice that Native American people face is an unfortunate historical legacy", Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye said.

Navajo Nation Council delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty cited the event as the "latest example of systemic, deep-seated ignorance" about Native Americans.
