Apple admits to slowing older iPhones to save battery life

The company went on to say that the iPhone 6 contains a feature that slows the phone down "only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down" due to a depleted battery.

If your iPhone is slowing down, replacing the battery is the only permanent solution.

It had always been rumored that Apple purposefully caused its phones to slow down over time.

"Our benchmarking data shows that, rather than intentionally degrading the performance of older models, Apple actually does a good job of supporting its older devices with regular updates that maintain a consistent level of performance across iOS versions".

Apple, the American multi-national technology company, has acknowledged it has taken action that slows the performance of its older iPhones.

While Apple's approach here makes sense, the company should have been more forthright about it from the get-go; especially since iPhone users, for years on end, were told that they were insane for even suggesting that Apple would purposefully slow down older devices. You can't help but wonder whether Apple is deliberately sabotaging your old iPhone.

iPhone Slowdown: Apple has confirmed that it is slowing down older devices, reports TechCrunch.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.

Secondly, iOS developer Guilherme Rambo‏ followed up Mr. Poole's work and found the existence of "Powerd" in iOS code: a power mode which he stated to be "responsible for controlling the CPU/GPU speed and power usage based on iPhone battery health". Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which... Owners can also purchase a kit to replace the battery. The tech company says that this feature is now active in the iPhone 7 as well.

Currently, affected models are iPhone 7, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, with other models potentially receiving the same feature in the future. "That is, your battery won't power your device as long on a given charge".

Apple is fortunate to be the software maker and hardware maker here, will be interesting to see what tests are conducted on other phones.

If you want to get the most from your phone, try to look after it, don't use it in extreme heat, don't overcharge it - oh, and do NOT charge your phone in extreme heat, that's really going to kick it in the guts.
