Cyclonic storm to hit Lakshadweep and southern Kerala, TN coast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the cyclonic storm is steadily progressing towards South Kerala and adjoining districts of south Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep Islands.

A defence release issued in Kochi said the Navy had deployed four ships and two aircraft to assist in the search and rescue of fishermen who reportedly went missing in the sea near Vizhinjam. It is also gearing up for Humanitarian Assistance that may be required due to the storm.

The Railways have cancelled a few trains completely and others partially due to heavy rains lashing the southern parts of Kerala. The IMD recorded an "isolated very heavy rainfall" of 15 cm in Aryankavu in Kollam district. Schools in seven districts across the two states have been closed.

The Chennai collector has declared a holiday for schools across the city in view of the heavy rainfall warning from the MeT department.

Squally weather has been forecast for towns along the south Kerala coast with winds up to 55 kmph blowing.
