Dana White admits UFC star Conor McGregor may never fight again

The last time the Dubliner stepped in the ring it was to take on unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr earlier this year in a boxing bout, for which he earned a reported $100million.

According to Mike Mazzulli, head of the Association of Boxing Commissions [ABC], who was in attendance on the night, the UFC made a decision to punish McGregor for the incident and remove him from the plans for UFC 219, which will now be headlined by the bout between Cris Cyborg and Holly Holm. Try to get up and get punched in the face every day when you have $100 million in the bank.

The Irishman has been inactive in the octagon since winning the lightweight championship by beating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016.

"Conor might never fight again", White told reporters during a media luncheon Tuesday at UFC headquarters.

In recent months, White had said publicly he hoped for McGregor to return in Las Vegas, either at UFC 219 on December 30 or UFC 222 on March 3.

One thing that's for certain, however, is that White isn't bending when it comes to McGregor's constant demand that UFC make him part owner. "I've got guys that made less than that and were lawyers and went to school their whole life and quit working". "And I don't say that lightly".

White admitted that McGregor's payday against Mayweather may have removed his desire to fight again in MMA. And I think in the next 24-48 hours, I believe that An Garda Síochána will be approaching Conor McGregor and saying to him, 'By the way, we just want to officially inform you that potentially your safety is at risk'. Considering the unprecedented leverage McGregor's now holds over UFC, it's hard to determine when and if he returns, or if it would take place in boxing or MMA. "If it's true, we'll get it figured out and we'll go from there".

"Conor is a rich kid who is a god in Ireland. He can do this but why I not?' This is why sometimes you have to follow rules when you're a big name, because a lot of people are watching you". "When you make that kind of money and you're that famous, you're going to have an overload of cling-ons".

Tony Ferguson won the interim lightweight title at UFC 216 and is the obvious opponent for McGregor should he make a return and that's a fight that Aldo wants to see.

"Listen, we ain't taking any direction from Ferguson".

And so, White continues to work toward a new deal that hopefully can work for both sides.
