Duped by Russian disinformation campaign? Facebook says this tool will tell you

Facebook has said that an estimated 150 million people on Facebook and its subsidiary, Instagram, saw ads that were created and paid for by a Russian propaganda firm.

All told, Facebook estimates these propaganda outfits spent more than $100,000 on political ads previous year. The social giant's tool specifically allows users to see if they followed or "Liked" any pages and accounts set up by Kremlin-backed trolls on either Facebook or Instagram.

Although there's a general consensus that the Russian government preferred Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the presidential election, the ads that Russian operators bought, which you can view here, were not uniformly pro-Trump. "Candidly, your companies know more about Americans than the United States government does and the idea that you had no idea that any of this was happening strains my credibility".

From the tool, you also have the option to log in with your Instagram account and make sure you didn't follow any fake accounts there either. The new tool is placed somewhere in the Help Center of the social networking site.

Google, Facebook and other tech firms joined global news organizations earlier this year in a major initiative aimed at identifying "trustworthy" news sources, in the latest effort to combat online misinformation.

By this point, it's pretty much understood that Russian Federation attempted to influence the 2016 Presidential election in the United States through social media posts.

Microsoft and Twitter also agreed to participate in the "Trust Project" with some 75 news organizations to tag news stories which meet standards for ethics and transparency.

Facebook has said it would be "challenging" to find and notify every single user that may have seen content or ads generated by Russian agents.
