Elon Musk promises 'major navigation overhaul' for Tesla cars in 2018

Elon Musk said on December 1 that he'd launch his old red Tesla Roadster toward Mars.

Tesla is reworking its approach to in-car navigation, and will deploy a "major navigation overhaul" in "early 2018", per Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who shared the news in response to a customer inquiry on Twitter. The photos were posted just hours after a picture leaked on Reddit that showed a grainy view of the vehicle being readied for its final ride.

But if Musk has left any room for doubt, it is now gone with a striking photo he posted to Instagram on Friday afternoon.

The launch vehicle is the first of its kind for SpaceX, and the aerospace company claims on its website to be the most powerful rocket in the world today. "Of course, anything boring is bad, especially companies, so we chose to send something unusual, something that made us feel".

"The payload will be an original Tesla Roadster, playing 'Space Oddity, ' on a billion year elliptic Mars orbit", wrote Musk under the heading, "A Red Car for the Red Planet". SpaceX's current workhorse rocket, the Falcon 9, can lift about 50,000 pounds to low-Earth orbit.

"Major navigation overhaul coming in early 2018".

The exact date of the Heavy test launch isn't clear.

In April, Musk said he was trying to think of the "silliest thing we can imagine" to stick on top that first Falcon Heavy rocket. "Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn't blow up on ascent".

With Musk's assurance that the upcoming navigation update would be far ahead of its current software's capabilities, Tesla's online community speculates that the update is a prerequisite for the upcoming Autopilot 2.5 suite of features.
