Franken becomes the second prominent Democrat to announce his departure from Congress this week amid sexual misconduct allegations. Rep.

At least eight women, including model and TV host Leeann Tweeden, came forward in recent weeks to accuse Franken of inappropriate behavior, with the allegations ranging from groping and kissing without consent to unwanted sexual advances.

"I know in my heart that nothing I have done as a senator has brought dishonor on this institution [.] I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate". That decision, he said, may have given "some people the false impression that I was admitting to doing things that, in fact, I haven't done".

Franken's departure is a headache for Democrats, exposing another seat in a midterm election that already had them defending two dozen incumbents.

Despite this, Franken said that he was resigning because he could not give the people of Minnesota his full attention while undergoing an Ethics Committee investigation.

"I know there's been a very different picture of me painted", Franken said.

"Enough is enough", declared Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of NY.

Dayton said he would make his appointment "in a couple of days". She would hold the seat until a special election in 2018.

Franken's Thursday resignation speech capped a meteoric political climb and swift fall for the former stand up comedian, who came into office in 2009 after surviving a recount, and was considered a potential Democratic candidate to challenge Donald Trump in 2020. Dayton is expected to move quickly to name a replacement if and when Franken makes it official.
