Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, confirmed that the lawmaker meant retiring effective immediately.

State Sen. Ian Conyers (D-Detroit), a great-nephew of the retiring Conyers, also has said he will seek to fill the seat. Conyers also complained that he was not being afforded due process to defend himself, and cited his health problems as another factor in his decision.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all the citizens in the country what federal legislatures are doing or not doing - and any cost that may have incurred as a result of that", Conyers said. Conyers has denied all the allegations, and on Tuesday, wrote the accusations off as "politics". Conyers, facing sexual misconduct allegations, has refused to step down even after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi urged the veteran Democrat from Detroit to do so.

Conyers first was elected to the U.S. House in 1964.
