MLS expected to announce Nashville expansion team

Detroit's hope to land an Major League Soccer franchise has taken a hit.

Major League Soccer officials have called a press conference for Wednesday in Nashville, where they are expected to announce Tennessee's capital has been awarded a new expansion franchise. Reports out of Cincinnati and from the Mercury News in California point to Cincinnati as the next to win an expansion team.

If that is the case, Detroit, Sacramento and several bidding cities that were not among the finalists will vie for two additional spots in the coming years.

MLS Board of Governors was scheduled to meet and vote last week, though FC Cincinnati has been given no exact time when a public announcement may come.

Falling into the consolation bracket, though, won't sooth the disappointment of Cincinnati or Sacramento fans if their city loses out.

A 27,500-seat stadium costing $275 million will be built by the team and city at the fairgrounds, which is a few miles from downtown, and the club may play at a temporary location like Vanderbilt University until it is completed, the Post reported. Why can't MLS to Miami be put on hold and an extra team be added in this round of expansion so Sacramento, Cincinnati and Nashville will all join in 2019?

Does St. Louis have any chance at all in the next round of MLS expansion? MLS, however, was swayed by the ownership, stadium plan, the city's cultural dynamic and demographics, and a pro sports market that has embraced the NHL's Predators.
