The average retail gasoline prices across the state have fallen four cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.54, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 2,158 gas outlets in Colorado. Today, that spread has doubled with premium gasoline costing nearly 50 cents more per gallon and is still climbing.

Ohio's gas prices were down 5.7 cents since last week's average.

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline dropped two cents on the week to $2.46.

Drivers are wasting their money if they use more expensive premium gasoline in vehicles that recommend but do not require it, according to new research by AAA.

That means fuel savings are not enough to offset the cost difference between Regular and Premium gas.

Following on what was a comprehensive, 41-page report, AAA joined with the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center to investigate whether auto owners can gain anything from putting premium fuel in vehicles that recommend but don't require it.

"Individual vehicle test result averages ranged from a decrease of 1% (2016 Audi A3) to an improvement of 7.1% (2016 Cadillac Escalade)", the agency said. The large drawdown demonstrates the USA growing export prowess, with EIA reporting that crude exports reached 1.4 million barrels per dayd last week compared to 500,000 barrels per day at the same time previous year. The research revealed that while recommended premium might upgrade fuel economy and performance, the additional cost isn't worth it.

If you're not sure whether your vehicle requires or just recommends premium fuel, you can find that information in your manual.

Since drivers of these vehicles are unlikely to see any benefit from using premium gasoline during typical city or highway driving, a combination of laboratory and on-road tests were performed to simulate extreme driving scenarios such as towing, hauling cargo, and aggressive acceleration. On average, vehicles produced 1.4% more horsepower using Premium.
