The world number nine birdied his first seven holes and won the elite event by four strokes thanks to a course record 11-under par 61 that left him at 18-under 270 for the tournament.

"Anything I did right ended up in a bad spot, then everything I did wrong, it was really bad", Woods told NBC television.

Breezy conditions made sub-par rounds hard at the Albany course with overnight leader Hoffman one of the few to deliver, surging to a five-stroke lead after a birdie at 18 for a two-under 70 and a 202 total. How am I going to get used to the adrenaline in my system for the first time in a while?

Said Woods, "I am very happy, very happy that I've hit the ball as well as I have, the feel of my putter, overall shaping of shots and just trying to put together a round".

"When I was struggling with my back, the world seemed very small. It's been really nice".

A further birdie putt on the 18th rolled agonisingly wide and Woods said he didn't think he had major adjustments to make to improve in the final round.

"I don't know what golf courses I will be playing, what's the best way to go about it.We'll figure it out".

Tournament host Woods made three birdies on the front nine and there were huge cheers when he holed a tricky putt for an eagle two at the 350-yard par-four seventh, set up by a mammoth tee shot which ended up beyond the pin. But the 79 times PGA Tour victor struck back with birdies at 11, 14 and 15 before bogeys at 17 and 18.

He added three more birdies on the back nine for a sizzling, bogey-free round.

American Jordan Spieth and England's Justin Rose were tied for second five shots back, Rose after a one-under 71 and Spieth with an even par 72.
