Saakashvili freed by Ukraine court, urges government change

Kyiv's Pechersky district court has turned down the prosecutor's motion to place leader of the Movement of New Forces Party in Ukraine and ex-president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who is accused by the Ukrainian authorities of trying to stage a coup sponsored by Russian Federation, under around-the-clock house arrest for two months, APA reports quoting UNIAN.

On Monday, he said the court decision to free him would hasten Poroshenko's ouster, calling on his supporters to stage a mass protest on Sunday.

Ukrainian authorities say Saakashvili is suspected of abetting an alleged "criminal group" led by former President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russian Federation after his ouster in February 2014.

Saakashvili told journalists after the hearing that he plans to continue his political activities with the goal of "constitutional, calm, but very necessary transfer of power in the country", accusing the Ukrainian authorities of corruption and "usurping power".

Judge Larysa Tsokol chose to set Saakashvili free.

About 200 of Saakashvili's supporters gathered outside the court and scuffled with police earlier Monday.

"I'm not afraid. I consider myself a prisoner of the Ukrainian oligarchy", Interfax cited Saakashvili as saying. The group was allegedly planning to overthrow President Poroshenko.

The 49-year-old politician served two terms as Georgia's president from 2004 to 2013.

Poroshenko brought Saakashvili and his team to Ukraine in 2015, gave him the Ukrainian citizenship and appointed him as the governor of the Odessa region to use his image as the author of Georgia's successful reforms.

Yulia Tymoshenko, a former prime minister who leads an opposition party, attended the hearing in a show of support for Mr Saakashvili.

Georgia stripped Saakashvili of his citizenship after his move to Ukraine.
