Tensions have heated up in recent months over the north's continued development of its nuclear and missile programme, in spite of global condemnation and worldwide sanctions.

On Wednesday, North Korea tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can fly over 13,000 km (8,080 miles), placing Washington within target range, South Korea said on Friday.

"We heartily celebrate the successful test launch of the Hwasong-15 which showed Chosun (North Korea)'s power and greatness to the whole world", read one banner held up by the crowd, referring to the missile.

North Korea has warned that a "reckless" joint military drill by the US and South Korea could spark a nuclear war.

Graham expressed confidence in the Trump administration's ability to manage the growing conflict with North Korea.

"So I want them (the Pentagon) to stop sending dependents and I think it's now time to start moving American dependents out of South Korea", Graham said.

The initial analysis shows Tuesday's launch likely involved a two-stage missile with a non-explosive dummy warhead, the official said.

A parliamentary committee on defense on Saturday approved a resolution to condemn North Korea's latest long-range missile test and its violation of an armistice agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

The missile's large size was immediately apparent in the photos, which analysts said could provide for a more powerful propulsion system.

With every missile launch or nuclear test, Kim has improved his country's capabilities, McMaster said.

"It's insane to send spouses and children to South Korea, given the provocation of North Korea".

It is likely the ballistic missile, fired higher than any previous North Korean missile, broke up as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere, the official said.

"I would need to see a bit more differences to fully believe they made this themselves", Dave Schmerler, a research associate at the James Martin Centre for Nonproliferation Studies, said of the launch transport vehicle. "However, the quake could have been caused by geological changes created from the recent nuclear explosion", said an agency official who asked not to be named.
