USA ambassador: North Korea missile 'brings us closer to war'

A parliamentary committee on defense on Saturday approved a resolution to condemn North Korea's latest long-range missile test and its violation of an armistice agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

It was the country's third intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test, but the first of what North Korea is calling its Hwasong-15 missile.

"North Korea's continued missile launch and violation of the armistice pose a serious threat to the peninsula and the global peace". However, the leader was seen celebrating the launch on Wednesday, after it was accomplished, with the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) publishing photos with a smiling Kim Jong-un inspecting missile equipment.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Washington's approach was dangerously provocative.

Earlier Russia's United Nations ambassador said North Korea should stop its missile and nuclear tests but also called on Washington to cancel military exercises with South Korea planned for December as it would "inflame an already explosive situation".

Haley said Trump had called Chinese President Xi Jinping and urged him to "cut off the oil from North Korea", a move that would deal a crippling blow to North Korea's economy. We do think they could do more with the oil.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, she also said that the North Korean leader "made a choice yesterday that brings the world closer to war, not farther from it".

"Anything beyond that is not the priority at this point", she said, responding to a question on whether regime change was on the administration's agenda after Trump's recent tweets and a speech by U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

In spite of Trump's rhetoric and warnings that all options, including military ones, are on the table in dealing with North Korea, his administration has stressed it favors a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

"We have never sought war with North Korea and still today we do not seek it".

A White House statement said Trump and Moon reiterated their strong commitment to enhancing the deterrence and defense capabilities of the U.S.

But Mike Elleman, a leading missile expert, wrote on 38 North, a website for North Korea analysis, that despite the missile's size it still probably couldn't send a heavy nuclear warhead as far as the US's east coast.

The US ambassador to the United Nations said the launch took the US "closer to war", but experts say the US may just have to accept North Korea as a nuclear state.

The US has repeatedly said that it will not accept North Korea as a nuclear power and that it will consider military intervention to stop it.

Mr Xi said China would like to keep up communications with the U.S. and all other related parties and "jointly push the nuclear issue toward the direction of peaceful settlement via dialogues and negotiations", according to Xinhua.
