"The wreaths are shipped from ME, and different companies volunteer their time to drop them off", Swoboda explained. Wreaths Across America's Houston chapter has brought a Christmas tradition that stands with those families and remembers veterans alongside them every year.

Wreaths Across America, which leads national ceremonies that honor military veterans in all 50 states and is celebrating its 25th anniversary, will hold a ceremony Saturday in Rock Hill.

The public is invited to attend and participate in the event. And it so happens that Swoboda's event will take place at St. Mary Anne's Church. "All donations are complete for this year, but will go toward next year's ceremony". This year, the organization feared it would fall short.

"Last year we had 90 to 100 people", Swoboda said. 40 drivers will move 18 trucks across America stopping at Fayetteville National Cemetery, Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Miramar National Cemetery, Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Joaquin National Cemetery, Riverside National Cemetery, and various other national cemeteries.

After the ceremony, Clark said volunteers are given particular sections to cover, and typically they hang a wreath on every third grave.

Area cemetery to be part of Wreaths Across America

The objective is not to decorate the graves, but to remember the lives of each individual veteran, asking participating volunteers to read the name aloud and thank them for their service each time they place a wreath, according to Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. "The wreathing ceremony lets them know they are not alone".

"If people can't donate their time but would still like to donate funds, they can do so through one of two ways", Palen said. "As we enter the holiday season, we should all take a moment to pause and give thanks for those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may celebrate in peace and security".

"I think that's why it's such an impact - it is the community", she said.

Mandeville Cemetery's live greenery wreaths were provided by a collection of volunteers and family members from across the area.
