HP recalls batteries for HP notebook computers and mobile workstations

HP has announced a worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for around 52,600 laptop batteries, which "have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers".

If you or anyone at your organisation is now using an HP laptop, downloading the utility or looking up the model number to see if the device's battery has been recalled is an absolute must to prevent a fire from occurring at your home or workplace.

And, as an additional safety measure, HP has instructed customers who determine that their battery should be replaced to use the BIOS update enabled by the company to set the battery to "battery safe mode", a mechanism created to discharge the defective battery and prevent continued use. The batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation or for any of the products listed above. HP is providing battery replacement services by an authorised technician at no cost. "This action pertains to 0.1 per cent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years".

Since HP was unable to isolate the defective batteries to just the U.S. or neighboring country Canada, the company has opted to make this a global recall, though it has identified that the recall affects batteries "sold worldwide from December 2015 through December 2017". HP is also providing a BIOS update that places the battery in Battery Safety Mode so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adaptor. There, you'll find a special HP Battery Validation Utility to download.

Sessions nixes Obama-era rules leaving states alone that legalize pot
But rescinding the Obama policy could have a chilling effect on the burgeoning marijuana legalization movement. Sessions revoked that document and others, citing the fact that pot remains illegal under federal law.

Three of those customers also reported property damage of almost $5,000, and one ended up with first-degree burns on their hand.

Some of the affected models are HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, and HP 11 notebooks.

Why this matters: Battery recalls happen every so often, often due to manufacturing issue.

Consumers with these batteries can install an update that will put the device in "battery safe mode" until it can be replaced. This mode will discharge the battery and prevent it from being recharged until the battery is replaced.
