Major League Baseball trade rumors: Astros acquire Gerrit Cole from Pirates

The Houston Astros' have reached an agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a trade for right-hander Gerrit Cole, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported Wednesday, citing sources.

It was reported early Wednesday by Major League Baseball that a trade had been consummated between the two clubs, but Astros GM Jeff Luhnow denied the report, saying no trade was "imminent". Passan did note that "generally, this sort of thing winds up with a deal being consummated". He is 59-42 with a 3.50 ERA in 127 career starts.

The Yankees were also rumored to be in on Cole, but ultimately came second in the sweepstakes for the 27-year-old.

Monaco Boss Admits Liverpool & Arsenal Target Thomas Lemar Could Leave in January
The former were willing to sell Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City this summer if they could get Lemar, but the deal fell through. It is stated that Lemar wants to move to Anfield despite interest from Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea .

However, the right-handed hurler has slipped some in recent years.

Though Cole is coming off his worst season - 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA in 33 starts - he is capable of being an elite starter. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2019 season. But this is a clear suggestion that the Pirates are in rebuild mode.

Acquiring Cole would bolster the Astros' already stellar starting rotation, as Justin Verlander, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers Jr. and Charlie Morton all are under contract for the defending World Series champions in 2018.
