Mariah Carey's Hot Tea Request Proves Celebrities Love Sippin' Tea Too

Mariah Carey, elusive chanteuse and patron saint of all things festive, had a triumphant return to the New Year's Rockin' Eve stage on Sunday night, where she effectively redeemed herself from last year's disastrous and technical difficulty-plagued performance, but perhaps more importantly, served up a diva moment so fabulous that it gave us the first meme of 2018.

While her 2016 New Year's Eve performance was much better than the lip-syncing disaster of 2016, Mariah Carey's NYE "redemption" show that saw her ring in 2018 was not without incident. But it wasn't almost as hot as the tea she had to go without.

"They told me there would be tea", Carey said. But by the time she got to "Hero", the second of her two-song set, she was our hero.

After her performance, she posted a picture of herself sipping tea on Twitter.

"Happy New Year!" she said, addressing the crowd. OK, well, we'll just have to rough it. Rather than fake her way through a few songs as she'd evidently intended, the singer wandered around the small stage, complaining about her monitors as prerecorded vocals played over the sound system. Compared to last year, though, it was pretty boring, and it was a lot less singular: Minus the redemption story line, Carey's performance was in line with those by the numerous other acts who appeared on "New Year's Rockin' Eve", none memorable enough to mention here. The singer's performance issues were evident from the start, as she claimed she was unable to hear the music she was suppose to sing along with. "I'm gonna be just like everybody else with no hot tea". She opened with "Vision of Love", which wasn't great, but considering the wind chill, she gets a pass. Despite the lack of a comforting hot liquid, Carey had no trouble hitting the high notes she is known for and earned wild applause from the audience.

Mariah Carey is back on form.
