With the temperature hovering around -5c, the 65-year old president has taken a dip in icy waters of the Seliger Lake, 350-kilometer north-west of Moscow. In some areas, the extreme temperatures - which in parts of Siberia dropped to minus 68 degrees Celsius (minus 90 Fahrenheit) - the local authorities canceled the rite which marks Epiphany. He lowered himself into the water, made a sign of the cross and submerged himself for a moment, in a scene captured by state media.

Epiphany, which is celebrated on January 19, is one of the most important holidays in the Russian Orthodox tradition.
