Residents cause apartment fire after using lighter to try to kill spider

KHSL reports that, rather than killing the bug with spray or a heavy object, the residents used a large torch lighter to set the spider on fire after they spotted it in their home on Sunday.

A California man using a lighter to kill a "huge" spider in his apartment ended up causing $11,000 worth of damage when the arachnid ignited a mattress. Wolf spiders are venomous insects that have hairy bodies and can be more than 1-inch long.

Sure enough, as the Record Searchlight reports, the seemingly fool proof plan went awry when when the spider, now aflame, ran about the gaff setting the mattress on fire.

The residents attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose, but with no luck.

Although no one was injured in the blaze, residents have been forced out of their homes.
