Around two-thirds of people who try even just one cigarette end up smoking at least daily, analysis of smoking data from the UK, United States, Australia and New Zealand has found.

Peter Hajek, lead author from Queen Mary University of London, said that this is the first time a link has been established using such large data between first trying a cigarette and becoming a regular smoker.

Research gathered from 215,000 survey participants in the U.S., U.K, Australia and New Zealand showed 60.3 percent of people had tried smoking cigarettes, and of those who tried it, an estimated 68.9 percent picked up a daily habit.

While it is natural to see some variation between surveys, it is interesting to note that United Kingdom respondents were consistently more likely to say they developed a habit compared to those from the other three countries. According to the researchers, one smoking experience is enough to leave a "remarkable hold" on the first timer.

The findings, published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research, provides strong support for prioritising efforts to reduce cigarette experimentation among adolescents.

The dramatic shift from one-time smoking to a daily habit added to the evidence of the dangers of cigarette addiction, and the researchers believe their information could help in creating guidelines to prevent teens from even trying out cigarettes for fun.

The Delhi Police are fining people found smoking in public places, during its four-day trial against smoking in public places, under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). The surveys included above 216,000 people. During the same period, 19.3% of 18-to-24-year-olds used to smoke compared to 25.8% in 2010.

Across the United Kingdom, more men are smokers than women, with 17.7% of men being current smokers compared to 14.1% of women.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health, called for the greater government regulation of tobacco sales. "We recently launched a new tobacco control plan to map the path to a smoke-free generation and are working to educate people about the risks and support them to quit for good." - the BBC reported.
