U.S. fails to get UNSC action on Iranian protests

US Ambassador Nikki Haley warned Iranian authorities on Friday that the world is watching, as thousands held pro-government demonstrations in Iran following anti-government protests, in which over 21 people were killed.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley argued the unrest could escalate into full-blown conflict and drew a comparison with Syria.

"The Iranian regime is finally on notice: The world will be watching what you do", she continued.

The statement drew vehement retorts from Russian Federation and Iran, which drew attention to protests within the USA that had been put down.

Hundreds carried out demonstrations in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Germany in support of Iranian protesters facing repression from the government in the past two weeks.

Following recent unrests in certain parts of Iran, US Representative to the UN Nikki Haley in a speech to reporters at the UN headquarters on January 2 accused Iran of violating human rights and freedom of expression and said Washington was after sessions on Iran by UNSC in NY and UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

Envoys from several other countries including China expressed reservations about whether the council was the right place to debate the issue.

Khoshroo said Iran has "hard evidence" that violence is being directed from overseas, and went on to describe recent instances in which foreign citizens have incited violence in Iran.

"Another FP (foreign policy) blunder for the Trump administration". "It is a powerful exhibition of courageous people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protest".

Treasure Secretary Mnuchin said that the Trump administration "will continue to decisively counter the Iranian regime's malign activity, including additional sanctions targeting human rights abuses".
