In a speech today (11 January), the Prime Minister launched the government's 25 Year Environment Plan, setting out a strategy designed to create better habitats for wildlife, improve air and water quality and reduce waste.

At the moment shops with under 250 employees are exempt from the charge, which was introduced in England in October 2015.

She said: "Our plan is a healthy and natural environment that we can all enjoy and which we can be proud to pass on to the next generation".

However, the BPF wants to emphasise the important benefits that the plastics industry brings to the United Kingdom, including 170,000 jobs, as well as the environmental advantages of utilising plastics, such as cutting fuel consumption, preventing food waste, reduced emissions and its place in the fight against climate change.

"With another truckload of plastic waste going into our oceans every minute, we just can't wait another 25 years before eliminating throwaway plastic", Edge said.

In a speech later today Theresa May will say people will be "shocked" at how much plastic is wasted.

"Today I can confirm that the United Kingdom will demonstrate global leadership", she said.

The 5p charge for plastic bags could be extended to cover almost all retailers as part of the government's plan to tackle our "throwaway culture".

The Prime Minister on Thursday vowed to take action on the "scourge" of plastic by 2042, pledging to slash the production of single-use packaging which ends up polluting countryside and beaches and poisoning the world's oceans.

He said the Government was "determined to tackle the throwaway culture which plastics encapsulate" and its plan would set out details of how to reduce demand for them.

You could start having to pay 5p for a carrier bag in corner shops and smaller stores to fit in with a government environment plan.

Other pledges include aid to help developing nations reduce plastic use and a new Northern Forest from Cheshire to Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Greenpeace questioned why there was no mention of deposit return schemes for bottles - which the government has said it will consider - while Friends of the Earth said a "clear timetable" not "woolly promises" was needed.
