Vivo's In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Smartphone Demoed at CES

Vivo has finally unveiled world's first smartphone with in-display fingerprint scanner. After all, that's where most phone makers introduce their latest and greatest smartphones yet - the ideal event for vivo to introduce the new technology on its new smartphone.

Looking a little further into the future, we could see multiple optical image sensors built into displays - or even entire displays featuring the technology, which would mean you could place your finger anywhere on the screen and have your fingerprint read. In-display, also called under-the-display or under-display fingerprint scanner, is a system where the sensor is placed right under the display screen which silently "retracts" once the phone has been unlocked.

Considering the timeline set out by vivo, there's a good chance the Chinese company will officially unveil the unannounced smartphone next month at MWC 2018. Compared to fingerprint sensors on the back of smartphones, Vivo In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology offers a more convenient operation without sacrificing the sleek and unified design of the smartphone.

Synaptics has said that the sensor takes just 0.7 seconds to recognize and authenticate the fingerprint.

Fingerprint sensors will still be the first choice for most Android phones in 2018, since other biometric authentication methods available for Android phone-makers can not completely replace fingerprint identification yet. The chip-maker went on to explain that the sensors were developed as an "integrated solution" that would work in tandem with the chip-maker's expansive line of Snapdragon CPUs for mobile devices. The technology behind it is actually made by Synaptics and below you will find a detailed explanation of the tiny new chip that sits under the screen glass and what it does, but first - the real impressions.

Fingerprint recognition has always been one of the most common and well-known biometrics used to secure smartphones. Once the fingerprint is registered, unlocking the phone works just fine, like any other physical fingerprint sensors. Under display fingerprint sensor is a technology that has been long expected to arrive as smartphone manufactures bring out edge-to-edge displays. But sadly none of the big smartphone manufacturers were able to implement this feature in their flagship phones.
