Bengaluru MLA NA Haris' son Mohammed Nalapad Haris surrenders

Police said Nalapad and his 10 friends beat up the man at a restaurant in UB City late Saturday night after they felt offended over him extending his feet, cast in plaster, towards the table they were sitting at. BJP and AAP who had hit the streets soon after news broke of the incident have demanded that Nalapad be booked for attempt to murder too.

Nalapad, whose whereabouts were unknown for the last 36 hours, came to the police station in the city centre along with a lawyer to record his statement and seek bail when produced in a court later in the day.

Nalapad and his supporters are believed to have also visited Vidvat at the hospital and warned him against filing a complaint.

Police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar suspended Hadagalli for not registering the case against Nalapad earlier and failing to arrest him.

On Sunday, five of Nalapad's associates were arrested and were suspected to be involved in the assault.

The victim, a resident of Dollars Colony, was having dinner at a high-end restaurant in UB City when Mohammed Nalapad and his friends walked in at 11:30 pm.

Foreseeing a major dent in the party's image, the Congress went into a damage-control mode and expelled Nalapad, general secretary of Bengaluru District Youth Congress, from the primary membership of the party for six years on disciplinary grounds.

The MLA described the incident as unfortunate.

Supporters of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) had gathered outside the police station to protest, while supporters of Haris, a member of the legislative assembly, had also turned up.

The man, identified as Vidwat, has been hospitalised. There is no option of adding another section once the FIR is filed.

He had surrendered before the police yesterday.

On Twitter, the Chief Minister said the offenders would be punished "regardless of who they are". "I have seen your report and ordered the strictest possible action against Haris' son".
