The deal would see Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union and its Bavaria-only sister party, the Christian Social Union, continue their four-year partnership with the center-left Social Democrats.

Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) chairman Martin Schulz announced on Friday that he would not pursue ministerial post in the next German government, including the foreign minister.

Senior figures of Social Democratic Party (SPD), including the current Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, have publicly criticized Schulz and accused him of not keeping his promises.

Fourth, initially in return for the role of Foreign Minister, SPD leader Martin Schulz (re-elected just last year) made a decision to stand aside in favour of the party's federal parliament floor leader, Andrea Nahles (whose impassioned speech was considered a decisive moment at the Bonn conference, in stark contrast to Schulz's underwhelming performance).

Faced with snap elections that could further boost the AfD or the prospect of heading an unstable minority government, she opted to woo back the SPD - her junior partner for two of her three terms since 2005.

"For that reason, I declare that I won't enter into the federal government - and at the same time sincerely hope to put an end to the personnel debate within the SPD".

Illini travel to No. 17 Ohio State
The Buckeyes rattled off 19 consecutive points to close out the half, taking the lead at the 3:12 mark on a layup by Andre Wesson. Outside the one hiccup, OSU has dominated the rest of the Big Ten, including a 16-point win over then-No.

"Angela Merkel has succeeded, she will remain chancellor if the SPD members vote for the coalition deal".

It had been only a year since Gabriel gave up the SPD leadership to make way for Schulz, who was then seen as the better candidate to challenge Merkel in September's election.

Schulz's choice to step aside to help secure an SPD vote in favour of a stable government "deserves the highest respect and recognition", said Andrea Nahles, his likely successor as party chair.

Kevin Kühnert, the leader of the youth wing of the Social Democrats said the result of the party vote could go either way: "This is not easy to tell, I think the [outcome of] the ballot is completely open". The results will be announced on March 4, according to party officials.

The anger towards Schulz is all the greater given he ruled out ever joining a Merkel cabinet. He reversed course, however, after Merkel's coalition talks with two smaller parties collapsed in November.

Her next step up the party ladder came in September past year when she was appointed SPD parliamentary leader, just weeks after the party's election result sunk to a mere 20.5% - its lowest level since modern Germany was founded.
