Giants, Vikings left battling it out for Kevin Stefanski

Sporting News reported earlier this week that Stefanski was Shurmur's preferred choice for offensive coordinator, but the Vikings would not release him from his contract unless they were able to hire Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their next OC. Meanwhile, Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley has also recently been brought up as a possible candidate due to his previous experience working alongside Shurmur. It was expected that since Stefanski had been passed over by the Vikings that he would then be named Shurmur's offensive coordinator in NY.

Hopefully, for Stefanski's sake, the Vikings increased his compensation when they informed him they were not going to let him talk to the Giants.

Because of Shurmur's past ties to the franchise, it was widely assumed the Vikings would allow Stefanski to at least get the opportunity to interview in NY if he was not promoted. But he'll have to stick as Minnesota's quarterbacks coach for another year while the Giants will have to go to Plan B at offensive coordinator.

The Giants have yet to request an interview for Stefanski, who has one year left on his deal with the Vikings, according to SiriusXM's Adam Caplan, but it's hard to envision Minnesota refusing such a request after passing him over to replace Shurmur. With guidance from DeFilippo, offensive coordinator Frank Reich and head coach Doug Pederson, Foles found a rhythm in the playoffs after an initially rocky takeover for the injured Carson Wentz.

Shurmur said on January 18 at the Vikings' Winter Park facility, when the Daily News traveled north to speak with the Giants' next head coach, that Stefanski has been "very patient with his career". He, along with Shurmur, turned Case Keenum from a career journeyman into one of the NFL's best quarterbacks last season.

The Eagles will reportedly promote assistant quarterbacks coach Press Taylor to quarterbacks coach as DeFilippo's successor. But according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the Minnesota Vikings have denied NY the opportunity to interview quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski. "They both do a great job of communicating what they want from me". "I'm a team player", DeFilippo said on a conference call with reporters.
