Patriots get extra draft pick, will select No. 136 overall

On Friday, the NFL awarded the Denver Broncos a third-round compensatory pick, No. 99 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Teams that lose high-end free agents and are unable to replace them with equal or greater talent are compensated with additional picks in rounds three through seven of the following draft. Cincinnati lost offensive linemen Kevin Zeitler and Andrew Whitworth, among others, to lucrative contracts elsewhere last March. The Buccaneers also have their own picks in the first six rounds plus Pittsburgh's sixth-round selection - courtesy of last summer's J.J. Wilcox trade - and the announcement of the compensatory selections means they also know exactly where those picks fall.

Green Bay lost the following free agents in 2017: Jared Cook, Micah Hyde, Eddie Lacy, T.J. Lang, Julius Peppers, and J.C. Tretter.

All four of the Raiders' compensatory selections will be in the sixth round. The No. 103 overall was traded to New England as part of the Jamie Collins trade; the No. 139 overall pick was a part of the Carson Wentz trade with Philadelphia; the No. 142 overall pick was traded to Houston as part of the deal to acquire the Texans' second-round pick this year and quarterback Brock Osweiler; and the No. 181 overall pick was traded to the New York Jets. Both the Bengals and Packers are receiving the maximum of four compensatory picks as are Dallas and Oakland. Baltimore's additions of Jefferson and Carr cancelled out the departures of Rick Wagner and Kyle Juszczyk. This marks the first time since 2011 that Tampa Bay has been awarded a compensatory pick. The year prior, safeties Justin Simmons (No. 98) and Will Parks (No. 219), as well as running back Devontae Booker (No. 136) were taken with compensatory picks.
