Pet Food Companies Issue Recalls In Fear Of Salmonella Infestation

The Food and Drug Administration is asking pet owners to be careful after a series of recalls and complaints involving pet food, citing positive tests of salmonella and/or listeria.

The contamination was discovered after reports of pets dying or falling ill, according to citing USA Today.

Last week, the FDA announced three other recalls, including Beefy Munchies from Smokehouse Pet Products, Inc. of Sun Valley, Calif., 7-inch bully sticks from Red Barn pet products of Long Beach, Calif. and ground turkey pet food from Raws for Paws of Minneapolis, Minn. Pets can also become carriers of the bacteria-without getting ill themselves-and infect humans. The UPC of the recalled product is #7 85184 25105 8.

"Despite not being able to replicate these test results or receiving any negative reports from customers regarding these chews, we feel the best course of action is to recall this lot code of the product and keep our customers safe". That means washing your hands and anything else that comes into contact with the pet food for at least 20 seconds in hot, soapy water, says the FDA.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture found that a single sample collected from a retail location tested positive for the pathogenic bacteria. Typically, a person or pet affected with salmonella experiences symptoms such as fever, body aches, nausea, and vomiting for four to seven days, and they often clear up on their own. However, pets don't always have symptoms, which for them include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite and lethargy.

People infected with Salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. They can also pass salmonella to people, even if they don't have any symptoms.

The FDA issued a warning to manufacturers saying it has a zero-tolerance policy for salmonella or other harmful bacteria in pet food.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Product production stopped as Raw For Pets investigates the problem.

The FDA is also investigating a pattern of contamination in raw pet foods made by Arrow Reliance Inc., which produces products for Darwin's Natural Pet Products and ZooLogics Pet Food.

Consumers who had this product in their homes should clean their refrigerator and clean and disinfect all bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, toys, floors, and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with.
