Security was tightened and restrictions imposed in Guru's home town, Sopore.

Guru was hanged in Delhi's Tihar Prison on February 9, 2013 at the age of 43 after an Indian court convicted him of involvement in a 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament in New Delhi. However, scarce movement of private vehicles was witnessed in uptown areas.

Today on Mohammad Afzal Guru's 5th death anniversary prayer ceremony was organized to pay tributes to him; however, state authorities laid curbs, restrictions and arrested hundreds of political activists.

A local resident said people were not allowed to move towards Jamia Masjid by forces, who had sealed all roads leading to the mosque.

According to reports large number of contingent of police and paramilitary forces were deployment across town to avert any law and order problem.

Shafat Hussain, Rising Kashmir's south Kashmir correspondent, informed the Newsroom that all shops, business establishments remain shut while public transport is off the roads.

Police also raided residence of Dukhtarn-e-Millat chairperson Asiya Andrabi. The ceremony was followed by a protest rally taken out from Press Club premises to Burhan Wani Chowk.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called for a complete shutdown on February 9 and 11 to commemorate the hanging anniversaries of Muhammad Afzal Guru and Muhammad Maqbool Bhat respectively.

They said Afzal Guru and Maqbool Butt laid down their lives for the cause of freedom and they provided the Kashmiris a lesson not to surrender before oppression.
