Slovenia beats U.S. in men's hockey on first day

Slovenia claimed a first ever win over the United States in worldwide ice hockey with a 3-2 overtime victory at the Winter Olympics.

Jan Mursak who scored the winning goal, Jan Urbas, Rok Ticar of Slovenia and teammates celebrate the victory in overtime following the Ice Hockey Men Preliminary Round match between U.S. and Slovenia at Kwandong Hockey Centre on February 14, 2018 in Gangneung, South Korea. Goals from Brian O'Neill and Jordan Greenway helped the Americans build a 2-0 lead.

The two games featuring American teams are packed on to a schedule that features five games with a wide array of storylines.

Philadelphia has been the pinnacle for recent underdog success stories, and a trio of locals are hoping to keep that mentality going for Team USA in a year in which no National Hockey League players will be participating in the games.

PM in UAE after visits to Jordan, Palestine

Which in all likelihood makes Thursday's (Wednesday night on the West Coast) first-round game between the sport's two superpowers at Kwandong Hockey Centre a sneak preview of the Games' gold medal final next Thursday. The Slovenians were clearly overmatched in the first period - when they only mustered three shots - as the Americans stormed to a strong start. Brian O'Neill gave team U.S. a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period off a nice assist from Roe Garrett from behind the net.

In Sochi, the U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team also played Slovenia during the preliminary rounds, and Team USA won 5-1. Even though the USA holds an 11-4 shot total, Slovenia skated with them much of the period and, lest we forget, this one could be tied right now. In four cases, players were pulled from their NCAA teams and classes to compete for their country, hearkening to the most famous of U.S. Olympic triumphs: the 1980 "Miracle on Ice".

In Wednesday's game, the USA got goals from Brian O'Neill and Boston University's Jordan Greenway. They'll need plenty of that to take down Canada. "So he's more like a power forward, doing a good job with the forecheck and stuff like that". "Sweden has a chance, but I for sure think Russian Federation is the favorite".

One of the new things players on either side of the border war agree on is that the rivalry brings out the best with both teams. Mueller is just three goals shy from the single Olympic record of nine goals.
