2000 eggs feared to be damaged at hospital

A malfunction in a storage bank at an OH fertility clinic may cause damage to more than 2,000 frozen eggs and embryos, according to media reports.

Samples would have to be thawed to determine whether they've been damaged.

"We don't know the reasons why yet", DePompei told NBC News.

Patients are devastated at the potential loss, and as a precaution, the hospital has ramped up security.

DePompei notes the temperature spike took place sometime between Saturday afternoon, when staff left for the day, and early Sunday. Some people had multiple samples stored, and some eggs and embryos have been stored since the 1980s.

The only way to know if they are still viable is to implant them says the hospital. According to the latest figures from the ARSM, more than 6,200 women froze their eggs in 2015. The numbers since then have only risen.

On average, freezing eggs can cost between $12,000 and $14,000. Sean Tipton, chief policy officer at ASRM expressed his sympathy for the affected families and said the organization would look into the matter ensuring this is not repeated.
