The strength of the printed walls are said to be stronger than cinderblocks after a few days of hardening, but the house is entirely habitable after it's been set up.

The properties, which are now at the concept stage, will soon be used to provide safe shelter for people in El Salvador and could one day be expanded worldwide to house billions.

Using an industrial sized Vulcan printer, ICON says it can now build their single-story home for $10,000 but is working to drop that cost to just $4,000.

They could also offer a viable option for the construction of off-world colonies on planets like Mars in the near future, the firm says.

ICON unveiled how it could build a 650-square-foot house with cement in a single day at SXSW, an innovation and film festival. The company also plans to build homes in the U.S. eventually.

'Icon aims to change this, ushering in a new era in construction to meet the needs of the future'.

ICON and New Story also want to partner to construct a 3D printed community, comprising of 100 homes, in El Salvador next year.

The construction company ICON is working together with the charity New Story to combat inadequate housing across the globe. Shockingly, this house is significantly greater than a studio flat.

Icon first creates a schematic, which is then fed into a computer that instructs the printer how and where to place the cement.

The model, which the company showed off at tech and music fair South by Southwest this week, boasts a living room, bedroom, bathroom, and a curved porch.

These homes aren't part of the "tiny house" movement and you won't see suburbs of these 3D houses popping up across America. Staff plan to use it as an office, where they will tweak the design based on their experience of spending long periods of time in the space.

"(ICON) believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci added. It will reduce labor costs and create minimal waste.

Startup company ICON, located in Austin, has recently revealed a new technique of building small homes. The cost will make the 3D printed houses a lot cheaper than the typical American house, according to Jason Ballard, who is the co-founder of ICON. For this venture to succeed, they have to be the best houses... Although 3-D printing has been used in building fabrication before, printing on-site using a universally available building material is a new step.
