An Adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time Was Never Going to Work

The film adaptation of the classic novel A Wrinkle in Time officially hits theaters Friday (March 9) and for many audience members, the film means something more than just a favorite book brought to life on screen. Based on the 1962 novel of the same name, the film is notable for being another milestone in the recent renaissance of African American filmmaking.

Storm Reid tried to play it cool when Ava DuVernay told her she'd gotten the lead role in Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time", but it wasn't long before the tears started flowing. This, along with its star-studded cast and messages of diversity, have surrounded the film with considerable hype. That's why we still talk about the intelligent world-building of "Harry Potter" and "The Wizard of Oz", where social hierarchies and centralized governments are essential to the makeup. Which (top-billed Oprah Winfrey, like her cohorts awash in runway-ready coifs and a planet's worth of glittery lip gloss). She blends the awkwardness of departing childhood with the coltish grace of impending womanhood, her face often on the verge of tears that Meg likely couldn't explain.

"Then how about we go and find him?" I have to know that I am not being as good to myself as a friend would be to me therefore I don't get to judge. She has a clear respect for the viewer to be able to follow along with the various jargon and scientific theories presented by the characters. It's why I feel privileged to call her my big sister. She has to go on a trip around the universe to figure that out.

What challenges did you experience filming? "I can hold myself down, but it isn't me".

Trump's ex-campaign chief Manafort to face two trials this year
Prosecutors in Washington have alleged that Manafort laundered more than $30 million and duped banks into lending money. Democrats frustrated saying Lewandowski refused to answer about questions about that Trump tower meeting with Russians.

That makes it an emotionally powerful movie in the hands of director Ava DuVernay ("Selma") and one that young people can deeply appreciate. On more than one occasion, each one helps the other find the strength they need to do something they never thought they could do.

We're in the midst of a cinematic movement where representation is being met with actual results with films like this and "Black Panther", what do you hope the legacy of this film does for this moment? Instead, she reminded us, this was an attempt to deliver a movie for 8-12-year-old kids. It's very much akin a children's fantasy adventure film from the '80s or '90s - the quirky Misses, especially Witherspoon's Mrs. Whatsit, are clearly indebted to Zelda Rubinstein's performances in "Teen Witch" and "Poltergeist". Her reactions to the unusual people they meet and places they go are realistic. "She has a handsome vision and a attractive mind". So she really opened my eyes to that you can't just be a director or an actor or a producer, but you really have to represent everyone in your cast and your crew. DuVernay swings for the fences, determined to create a sci-fi film unlike anything you've ever seen. A Wrinkle in Time is a rare film for children that doesn't shy away from the hard realities of life but also shows a way forward to a better world. I saw it in 3D, and I think that added to the beauty of some of these scenes, particularly the one in which chatty crimson flowers are so wondrous to behold. In the book, Camazotz was peopled by automatons who did everything at the same time because they had surrendered their intellects and their individuality to one central power.

I want the audience to know that they can be themselves and they are flawless just the way they are, they shouldn't let anyone tell them any different.
