Canada issues new travel warning for Playa del Carmen

"‎The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City received information about a security threat in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico", reads the security alert.

But Allison Wallace with Flight Centre Travel Group said the company has actually seen an increased number of bookings to Mexico compared with this time previous year.

Some tourist destinations have no warnings against them, including Mexico City, Cancun, and Los Cabos.

"I haven't had one single call on it today", Babuk said.

"I don't think that they need to be anxious about going down to the area".

The advisories come about two weeks after an explosion on a tourist ferry in Playa del Carmen injured 26 people, including at least five USA citizens.

In late February, 26 people were injured after an explosion ripped through a ferry as passengers were leaving the vessel.

The Quintana Roo Government issued a statement after the advisory was put in place saying that tourists will continue to be welcome. A day before that, a shooting at a music festival in Playa del Carmen left three foreigners and two Mexicans dead.

There were 25 people injured in the explosion, the director of Civil Protection for Playa del Carmen told ABC News.

Claire Newell with Travel Best Bets has been telling her clients to be more aware of their surroundings when heading to that popular destination. "Avoid tourist ferries travelling in the region until further notice, be vigilant and monitor local media (including social media)". "Be very cautious on major highways and in rural areas".

One week later, an "apparent explosive device" was found on a Barcos Caribe ferry in Cozumel, Mexico, according to the Playa del Carmen state prosecutor. Both incidents are under investigation. The U.S. Consular Agency in Playa del Carmen will also be closed until further notice.

Still, Mexican officials on Thursday said that Playa del Carmen was safe despite the US security warning.

The U.S. State Department says they are continuing to investigate with local authorities after discovering the undetonated explosive on March 1.
