Karnataka adopts official state flag

With just a few months left for the state of Karnataka to go for its Assembly Elections, the state flag of Karnataka has been revealed before Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, activists, ministers on Thursday. Thus now the flag, which had red and yellow blocks has been now changed to three colours - yellow on the top, white in the centre and red in the bottom.

On the other hand the Karnataka Chief Minister had defended the move for a separate flag for the state, asking if there is any provision in the Constitution that prohibits the state from having its own flag.

The emblem which forms part of the flag is used in all State correspondence.

The new flag is a tricolour - yellow, white and red. Karnataka has had an unofficial state flag since the mid-1960s when pro-Kannada groups agitated against the screening of non-Kannada films in the state. However, following repeated demands for a separate flag, the state government formed a nine-member committee in July 2017 to work upon a design for the official state flag.

The Chief Minister said the state bureau had requested that he take a choice subsequent to taking the sentiments of the professional Kannada associations and intellectuals.

Siddaramaiah government had constituted a nine-member committee a year ago to design the state flag. The state had recently witnessed huge protests over Hindi imposition by the Centre.

The State Government would make a formal application to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, under whose purview the issue falls. They had said that working on a separate flag of the state was against the nation. "But, the State flag will always fly below the National flag, as prescribed", said Siddaramaiah. "We will press upon the Centre to clear this soon".

Prakash said the BJP had no objection to the state flag or its design. "There is no opposition for States to have separate flag in the Constitution. There is absolutely no problem with the state using this as a symbol of the rich and proud heritage of Karnataka", he had said. "We hope it will be approved quickly", he said.

The new flag will bear Karnataka's coat of arms. "I am happy that we finally have a Kannada Baavuta (Kannada Flag)".
