Joining a growing list of companies tightening their gun sales policies, L.L. Bean has decided that it will discontinue the sale of firearms and ammunitions to customers younger than 21.

U.S. retailers Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods became the latest companies to shift course on guns Wednesday, announcing they were ending firearms sales to consumers under 21.

Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, and Dick's Sporting Goods, which has more than 600 shops - 37 of them in Florida - announced Wednesday major gun reform policies in their outlets, and ever since have been hearing praise from the anti-gun lobby and boobirds among the nation's hunting class.

Delta Air Lines, meanwhile, which ended discounts for NRA members flying to the group's annual meeting, described the shift as an attempt to maintain a "neutral status in the current national debate over gun control amid recent school shootings", Delta said on Twitter.

And Americans are taking note, lighting up social media boards with vows to back up the companies with their wallet, or to boycott them.

Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the USA, said on Thursday that it will stop selling guns to anyone under 21 years old through its 43 Fred Meyer stores nationwide, The Wall Street Journal first reported.

The move comes in the wake of the Florida massacre, where high school student Nikolas Cruz gunned down 17 people. Further, the retailer is now requiring all firearm buyers to be at least 21 years of age. He is charged with using an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle to carry out the killings. Companies that have shifted course have tried to thread the needle by championing gun ownership rights.

They say they look for red flags in all consumers, not just those between 18-years-old and 21-years-old. It said it takes "seriously our obligation to be a responsible seller of firearms" and also emphasized its background of serving "serving sportsmen and hunters".

Since the Parkland shooting, there have been increased calls for a ban on weapons such as AR-15s and raising the age required to legally purchase a gun.
