Martin Shkreli sentenced to prison

Last August, Martin Shkreli, aka Pharma Bro, aka Big Pharma Douche, aka Just A Really Horrible Human Being, was convicted of two counts of securities fraud and conspiracy.

Attorney Benjamin Brafman argued for Matsumoto to sentence the former pharmaceutical company CEO known for trolling critics on the internet to 18 months in prison.

"Mr. Shkreli is not a child", federal prosecutor Jacquelyn Kasulis said.

A complicated picture of Shkreli emerged from the trial, said Matsumoto, who said the case had given her a case of insomnia.

What we're seeing is a man getting sentenced to long stay in Federal Prison for being a supreme asshole who also did a dumb fraud.

On Friday, judge Kiyo Matsumoto said the fraud case was not about Shkreli's "self-cultivated public persona". And after his conviction a year ago, the judge revoked his bail and jailed him when he said he would pay a $5,000 bounty to anyone who could get a lock of Hillary Clinton's hair while the Democrat was on a book tour. "The "real" Martin Shkreli may not be known to anyone save himself", the prosecution said.

At Friday's sentencing hearing, he said: "Prison has been a heartbreaking experience". She said that the offer could be viewed as "solicitation of an assault".

Earlier this week, Matsumoto ordered Shkreli to forfeit about $7.4 million in assets, including a one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album.

While awaiting sentencing, Shkreli boasted that he would end up serving hardly any time and what time he did serve would be in the relatively posh environs of a "Club Fed" prison for white collar criminals.

Shkreli's choked-up presentation was in sharp contrast to the unapologetic attitude he has exuded since he became infamous in 2015 for raising the price of Daraprim, an anti-malarial medication used by HIV patients, from $13.50 to $750 per pill.

Ahead of sentencing, Shkreli's attorney told the judge there were times he wanted to punch his client in the face.

In addition to serving time, Shkreli also owes money.

Shkreli insisted he was being persecuted by prosecutors for being outspoken and confidently predicted after his conviction that he was unlikely to be sentenced to jail. She spent a while going through the letters she received - against and in support - of Shkreli's character.

She allowed prosecutors to go after Shkreli's Picasso painting and his hip-hop crown jewels - a copy of Lil' Wayne's "Tha Carter V" and a single-edition cut of the Wu Tang Clan's "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin", which reportedly cost $2 million.
