Only 13 people bought tickets with Delta's NRA discount

Delta CEO Ed Bastian sent employees a note Friday saying the airline rescinded the discount and asked the NRA to remove the company's name and logo from its website following the gun group's "controversial statements after the recent school shootings in Florida".

Delta had explained its decision to end the NRA-related discounts to reflect the company's "neutral status" in the national debate over gun control, but that it still supports Americans' constitutional right to bear arms.

A Delta spokesperson told the Atlanta Journal Constitution only 13 passengers had used the NRA discount.

There is that, and then there was Thursday, when those Republicans in the Georgia state Senate followed their House colleagues by voting to yank away a proposed $50 million jet fuel tax exemption from Delta Airlines, one of the state's largest employers.

"I will kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with @NRA", Cagle tweeted.

The final version of the bill dropped a tax break worth millions to the airline.

That's not, of course, how NRA supporters or the Georgia lawmakers regard Delta's decision.

The move backfired. Republican Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who is running for governor, tweeted that conservatives would "fight back" against a perceived corporate attack on their pro-gun values.

On Thursday, both houses approved the bill, after dropping a fuel tax exemption for Delta.

Delta said it would review all of its partnerships and end all politically charged affiliations.

Delta did not respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon about the tax bill, but Bastian thanked Deal in his March 2 memo for his work on the tax exemption. But GOP lawmakers' willingness to use public money to try to intimidate corporations could damage Georgia's ability to attract new industry - including Amazon, which recently named metro Atlanta a finalist for its coveted second headquarters.

However, following the shooting a high school in Parkland, Florida which claimed 17 lives, Delta chose to drop ties with the organization which led to an angry backlash from prominent Georgia Republicans.

More than a dozen companies distanced themselves from the NRA after the school shooting in Florida.

"Businesses have every legal right to make their own decisions, but the Republican majority in our state legislature also has every right to govern guided by our principles", Cagle said in a statement.

"It's not uncommon for airports to scale down hub cities, but Atlanta is an global hub, not just domestic hub, for Delta", Milman said.

"I'm sure if we got someone from a company like Delta who was interested in taking a look at our state, those are the type of conversations that we on the committee would love to have".

"That is not the case", Mr. Bastian wrote.
