Opioid-related emergency-department visits in Pennsylvania increased 81 percent from July 2016 to September 2017, one of the highest rates among 16 states studied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

IL had a 66 percent increase in opioid overdoses from July 2016 through September 2017, while Missouri's rate increased by 21 percent, according to a Tuesday report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

SCHUCHAT: We saw sadly that in every region, in every age group of adults, in both men and women, overdoses from opioids are increasing.

Emergency department visits, as outlined in Tuesday's report, capture a snapshot of the opioid crisis faster, and the picture shows virtually no sign of improvement across much of the U.S.

Kentucky's emergency opioid overdose visits decreased by 15 percent, and Rhode Island and New Hampshire both saw decreases of 10 percent or less.

Beforehand the office took a gander at death from opioids, which fall behind reports from crisis rooms. Two states reported overdoses more than doubled - including in Wisconsin with 109% and DE with 105% increases.

The Minnesota Department of Health study joins a growing body of documented, academic research that seems to strongly indicate that cannabis use-far from being an invitation to harder drugs-could actually be a viable alternative for treating addiction to opioids and overuse of prescription painkillers.

"And, so we think there probably is not an increase in people using drugs, but there is an increase in the danger associated with a single use", Schuchat said.

Health officials have been playing catch-up with the opioid epidemic all along, leaving many questioning how we got to the crisis point we've reached. It's unclear, Schuchat said in a press call Tuesday afternoon, whether those states - which have been dealing with the opioid crisis longer and generally have more programs in place to prevent overdoses - are seeing the beginning of a persistent decline or simply a "statistical fluctuation". Among men, it was 30 percent.

Benjamin Miller with the Well Being Trust, a national foundation that explores holistic health issues, said the latest CDC data on opioid overdoses is tragic, unsurprising and offers the latest "reflection of our country's inability to have a timely and comprehensive response to these issues".

According to the CDC, overdoses kill about five people every hour across the US with the victims totalling 5,400 more in 2016 then the soldiers who died during the entire Vietnam war.

Overdoses increased in all five regions of the United States, and in every demographic.

STEIN: Kolodny says the nation needs billions of dollars to provide treatment for the millions of Americans struggling with their addiction.
