'Pacific Rim 2' dethrones 'Black Panther' at the weekend box office

Worldwide, Black Panther is now the twelfth-highest grossing movie ever with $1.24 billion after adding another $12.9 million in 57 markets.

As expected, Pacific Rim Uprising (NASDAQ:CMCSA) became the film to knock Black Panther (NYSE:DIS) from the top spot at the box office after five weeks, but Disney may be too busy counting money to get concerned.

The $150 million production took a so so $28 million in its opening 3 days, while Black Panther fell to $16.6 million. Although the Pacific Rim sequel tops the US box office in its opening weekend, it still pales in comparison to the Marvel film.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, Pacific Rim Uprising features John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, Scott Eastwood as Nate Lambert, Cailee Spaeny as Amara Namani, Jing Tian as Liwen Shao, Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori, Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Burn Gorman as Dr. Hermann Gottlieb.

With "Black Panther" finally loosing steam at the box-office, and "Tomb Raider" already a week-old, a flurry of new films hit movie theaters across the country this weekend.

Faith-based drama I Can Only Imagine followed up last weekend's overperformance with an exceptional hold, down just 19% to $13.8 million. The first film became a success on the back of worldwide grosses, and Uprising is hoping to follow in down that same road. The film's $631 million in domestic ticket sales has surpassed the $623 million of 2012's "The Avengers". With the rate it's going, Black Panther is aiming for around $660 million domestically which would make it the #3 all-time North American grosser.

Sherlock Gnomes opened in fourth place with $10.6 million. The Chadwick Boseman starrer has grossed $630.9 million domestically so far to become the fifth-highest grossing movie ever. Falling from second last week to fifth this was "Tomb Raider", a Warner Bros. adventure reboot starring Swedish actress Alicia Vikander as the fearless and ferocious Lara Croft. This is not terribly surprising since the first Pacific Rim did better in China than it did in the USA but it remains to be seen how the movie will continue to fare both at home and overseas. "Sherlock Gnomes", $10.6 million. 5. It isn't doing much better overseas with another $2.3 million and just $14.1 million total in just 31% of global territories. The "I Can Only Imagine" cumulative mark now stands at $38.3 million.

Love, Simon suffered a similar drop in its second week to those films, earning just $7.8 million capping its two-week total around $23.7 million. Midnight Sun opened in tenth place with $4.1 million and the new thriller Unsane finished in eleventh place with $2.8 million.
