In front of the main entrance to Highlands Ranch High School stood about 100 students. Pinckney students shared 17 belief statements that served as a platform for the event. Student organizers eulogized the Parkland victims and spoke about their own hopes and fears regarding gun violence.

The National Walkout Day on March 14 was meant to protest gun violence and push for stricter gun laws. "But this is not the world I want to live in".

He said over the last month, they dug deeper into the issue of gun violence by using different teaching tools like debates and research topics.

Marsh says, "I want them to start focusing more on our safety and less on petty arguments".

"Through these extraordinarily hard times, I have been continually impressed by the level of intelligence, compassion and maturity of our students", he wrote.

I'm glad so many schools, and so many students, took part in events in Berks County on Wednesday.

On a cold and windy morning in the university's designated public forum space, the students walked out of their classes for 17 minutes - one for each victim of the Parkland shooting - holding pro-gun-control signage and observing a silent vigil.

Classroom instruction continued during the protests, which were supervised by administrators.

CHS principal Jeremiah Johnston said afterward 17 minutes wasn't going to make or break a school day, hence the willingness of the school to let the event take place without ramifications.

"They were very good with all of it and pretty much expected it would happen", said Reed. A small group of faculty members stood with law enforcement and watched to make sure students were able to protest safely.

"I felt like I needed to help in a way to give back to the community", Moseby said.

But it quickly became apparent that many students around the country decided not to go to classes at all and to demonstrate instead.

"We've lost innovators, inventors", he said.

The demonstration was organized Tuesday night by teacher Sarah Grieger and student Austin Keranen.

Justin Blackman, 16, was the only student to walk out of his school in Wilson Preparatory Academy in support of the movement. In response, Keranen reached out and stated gathering up other students.

"I babysit for kids that go to that school", Hughes says. They carried signs with messages like "Never again" and "Am I next?"

"Our students did the right thing", Shelton said.

Peacock said his main concern is protecting people.

"Us students are exhausted of going to school in fear that we won't make it out safe or even alive", she said.

"New Prague Area Schools fully respects and recognizes that students have free speech rights".
