Free iCloud storage for students, meanwhile, has been dramatically bumped up from 5GB to 200GB.

CHICAGO-Apple today announced an updated version of the iPad-its cheapest yet, it says, and with a focus on education. The new iPad costs $299 for schools and students instead of $329 - the same discount as with the old entry-level iPad, but with significantly better hardware.

It was initially rumored that the event would see the formal release of iOS 11.3, new low-priced MacBooks, a new Apple Pencil, and even new iPhones, but none of those rumors were true.

The device will come with an 8 megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p video as well as a HD front-facing camera, last up to 10 hours on a single charge and optionally offer LTE support. That is not going to happen this year as last year's 9.7-inch iPad is completely dead. Apple is adding the ability to use its digital pencil to write and draw on the screen of the new iPad - something previously limited to its more expensive line of iPad Pro tablets.

What's especially interesting is the iPad's support of augmented reality (AR) through Apple's ARKit. A host of new software tools and platforms were also released for the education space.

"We are proud to be here in Chicago", Cook said at the start of the conference, announcing partnerships with Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges to teach 370,000 students coding and the skills to create "the next generation of killer apps". The Mac version of the app will be available in beta starting in June. It will also work with Macs in the future.

Schoolwork and apps that take advantage of it give teachers new insight into how their students are performing, helping them tailor their teaching to the needs and potential of individual students. Developers can integrate their apps into the Schoolwork App through the ClassKit software kit. But today's announcement goes a step further for students, and the tech giant will be hoping that it will help spur sales and drive a recovery in its tablet business.
